JOY & MADNESS

Price: $10-25

An eight piece soul and funk explosion out of Sacramento that could be described as Jamiroqui meets J. Geils, Joy & Madness has been rocking stages all over the West Coast since inception. They have shared the stage with the likes of Tower of Power, Collective Soul, The Monophonics, the Motet, and the Pimps of Joytime, Dumpstaphunk, and Trombone Shorty and bring a live performance which leaves everybody inspired, sweaty, and full of joy.

Joy & Madness began with 5 core members who met in a previous project. They added long-time Sacramento funkateer, Miss Nyxi on bass, and the prolific funk guitarist, Bobby G. Bobby G, who had played with and produced the likes of Earth, Wind, and Fire, Sheila E, Lionel Richie among others, had a chance encounter with Miss Nyxi after sitting in with Tower of Power’s Roger Smith. After Miss Nyxi introduced him to Joy & Madness, he added his impeccable funk chops, production skills and musical ingenuity to the band. With a raucous mix of raw stonesy energy, pulsing groove, and juicy horn lines coloring tightly crafted songs, Joy & Madness brings a modern classic pop sensibility to a new age of joyous funk and soul.

Recently described by Jazz Times as one of “the finest male jazz singers in the world,” Kenny Washington has earned a devoted following among peers like trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, pianist Geoffrey Keezer and vibraphonist Joe Locke. Avoiding publicity and participating in highly selective recordings, he’s long been considered the Bay Area’s best kept jazz secret. No one has done more to showcase his extraordinary talent than saxophonist/arranger Michael O’Neill, who has created a series of projects over the past decade featuring startlingly inventive arrangements specifically designed for Washington’s nonpareil talent. After 17 years of working together, Michael and Kenny are adding the great singer, Tony Lindsay, to the mix!

THE MICHAEL O’NEILL QUINTET

Blue Note Napa

Time: 3:00 PM
Price: $10-25

Michael O’Neill Quintet

Michael O’Neill – saxophone
Erik Jekabson – trumpet
John R. Burr – piano
Dan Feiszli – bass
Alan Hall – drums

Michael O’Neill, a San Diego native, began studying clarinet at an early age. One of his first influences was his neighbor, the great jazz and studio drummer, saxophonist, and clarinetist, John Guerin who helped Michael with his first band in Junior High School. After the usual involvement with school bands and orchestras, Michael did a stint in the Air Force Band. He studied composition and arranging as well as jazz performance while playing in clubs to pay for living expenses.

Michael began playing music professionally for financial and recreational reasons in his off hours. After two years of graduate school, he decided to dedicate himself to a full time career in music (as with Duke Ellington, music was Michael’s jealous mistress). Michael became very involved with composition and formed groups to perform his original material. This started a trend that is ongoing today with his current quintet. Michael now leads several jazz groups in the Bay Area.
