Homeowners Boosting Curb Appeal With Unique Front Yards

by Traci Stanier

Most homeowners who are tackling front-yard jobs want to make sure that their property stands out from the crowd.

Why Curb Appeal Matters…First impressions are everything – at least when it comes to selling your home. According to the National Association of Realtors, 63 percent of homebuyers will drop by after viewing a home they like online. What will they see? The home’s exterior – including the front entry, yard, driveway and sidewalk.  This should serve as a snapshot of what’s to come when potential buyers enter your home.

Forty-four percent of homeowners are taking on front-yard improvements. Before the project, 36 percent of homeowners reported that their front yards were nearly identical to neighboring properties, but after the work is done, only 6 percent feel that way. Ninety-four percent of those surveyed say that their front yards are very or extremely different from other properties in the neighborhood once the overhaul is complete.

Upgraded flower beds and borders are the most popular front-yard improvement. New shrubs and perennial plants also rank high on the list, appearing in nearly one-third of projects. Most homeowners choose low-maintenance plants, reflecting the fact that only small percent of homeowners are planning to regularly hire a professional landscaper once the project is complete.

You know you’ve achieved great curb appeal when the outside of your house looks inviting enough that a buyer will want to stay long enough to see the inside of the home. Great curb appeal will not only help you sell your home faster, but it can help the value as well.
