PGA Tour’s 2018-19 season begins this week in Napa with the Safeway Open
Safeway is the title sponsor of the event, which will have a 144-player field and will be played on the North Course, a par-72, 7,203-yard layout. The tournament will be televised by Golf Channel and is part of the FedExCup schedule.
The winner will receive $1.1 million.
The first round is on Thursday, with players starting from the first and 10th tees at 7:20 a.m.
This is the third year of the Safeway Open. The five-year agreement runs through 2020 with the PGA Tour event remaining at Silverado for the duration.
One hundred percent of ticket sales from the tournament will be given to wildfire relief in Napa. The Safeway Open has generated about $4 million for charities in the first two years of the event.
The event is part of the PGA Tour’s 46-tournament schedule for 2018-19 that concludes with three FedExCup Playoff events. The PGA Tour’s wraparound schedule bridges two years.

The week gets started with Monday’s Johnny Miller Pro-Am. There are also practice rounds. Monday’s schedule is not open to the public.

The Safeway Open Pro-Am is on Wednesday, with play starting from the first and 10th tees at 7:10 a.m. The Under Armour Junior Clinic, free for all juniors and their families, will be held on Wednesday. It starts at 4 p.m. on the first tee. PGA Tour players will provide tips and tricks in this junior golf clinic.
Mickelson is No. 25 in the World Golf Ranking and finished the 2017-18 season at No. 13 among FedExCup leaders.
Mickelson won the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship in March. He is a World Golf Hall of Fame member and the winner of 43 PGA Tour events. He is a three-time Masters champion and the winner of five majors.
It will mark Mickelson’s third consecutive year playing in Napa. He tied for third place last year at Silverado, shooting 12-under-par for the week. He tied for eighth place here in 2016 with a 14-under-par total.
Steele became the first repeat winner of the Safeway Open last year. He shot a final round 69 and won with a 15-under 273 total. He edged out Tony Finau by two shots and two other players, Mickelson and Hadley, by three strokes.
Couples, a 15-time winner on the PGA Tour who has a Masters title, is playing here on a sponsor invitation.
Cantlay is No. 22 in the World Golf Ranking and No. 20 among FedExCup leaders. Cantlay won the Shriners Hospital for Children Open last year.
Snedeker is a nine-time PGA Tour champion and won the Wyndham Championship in August.
Bae and Grillo have both won at Silverado, when the tournament was played as the Frys.com Open. Bae won in 2014 and Grillo won in 2015.
Hadley is No. 33 among FedExCup leaders.
Other winners from the PGA Tour’s 2017-18 season who are in the field are Ted Potter, Jr. (AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am), Andrew Landry (Valero Texas Open), Michael Kim (John Deere Classic), and Troy Merritt (Barbasol Championship).
Luke List, who is No. 36 among FedExCup leaders, is also in the field.
The tournament awarded Mark Mulder, a former major league pitcher who plays golf in celebrity events around the country, a sponsor invitation. Mulder, who pitched for the Oakland Athletics (2000-04), is a three-time winner (2015-17) of the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship. It’s played in July at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course at Lake Tahoe.
The field also features Joaquin Niemann, who is from Santiago, Chile. Niemann is one of the nominees for PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. Niemann had nine made cuts and four top-10 finishes, with a tie for fifth at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier.
Safeway Open qualifying
Aaron Beverly of Fairfield shot a 74, but did not advance in a Safeway Open pre-qualifier Friday at Bayonet and Black Horse’s Bayonet Course in Seaside.
Beverly tied for 39th.
Kevin Alexander of Napa also failed to advance after shooting a 78 and tying for 59th.
Only 13 players moved on to the open qualifying, scheduled for Monday at Coyote Creek in Morgan Hill. The low four qualifiers advance to the Safeway Open.
Safeway Open
Daily tickets to the Safeway Open, a PGA Tour event Oct. 1-7 at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, are on sale and include admission to the Safeway Open Concert Series, as well as the 27,000-square foot Safeway Food and Wine Pavilion.
Monday’s schedule is not open to the public.

The event will again feature a concert series with three consecutive nights of music after golf, featuring Sammy Hagar & The Circle, Young the Giant, and Billy Idol.
